This book helped me through an extremely difficult time and changed the way I approached life altogether. It made sense out of all the icky, heavy feelings I’ve been carrying around since elementary school. It defined them, gave them meaning, and in the process allowed me to truly understand what compassion is.

Biggest Takeaways

  1. Shame is so powerful, it can disconnect us from people and make us feel like we’re the only one experiencing what we’re experiencing.

  2. Shame breeds perfectionism.

  3. When you know what shame is, how shame feels, and you can recognize your shame triggers, you can really start to build resilience to shame.

  4. Shame resilience takes practice, but there’s plenty of evidence that if we practice critical awareness of shame, we can start to build the skills needed to battle it.

If you’re not a Brene Brown fan yet, reading this book will turn you into one.
